Since 1988, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) has had in place the standard Responsible Care® to respond to public concerns about the manufacture and use of chemicals. By means of an industry-wide framework comprising guiding principles and codes of management practices, chemical companies use Responsible Care® as a tool to improve the responsible management of chemicals. Performance goals reflecting the concerns and expectations of both the company and its stakeholders must be established for specific health, safety and environmental performance issues. In 1996, the international standard for environmental management system (ISO 14001) was released and has been adopted by more than 100 countries (including the U.S.) as their national standard for environmental management.
